THAKARKI SCHOOL PROJECT – OCTOBER 2023
We have been working with Pakhar Foundation providing full funding through Ankur Welfare to improve facilities and the quality of teaching in the village school. The condition and the teaching at the school was in a very poor state. The project was devised after a detailed study of the facilities and the student’s requirements. Ankur were appointed as they have experience in this area and would lead the efforts to improve the school. The project began in April this year at the start of the academic year after agreement with the Headteacher. The Headteacher left in May and a new teacher was appointed. She has previously taught at the school.
Since April the facilities have been much improved providing a cleaner and healthier environment for the children. The following work has been completed and have been brought up to a good condition:
Toilet block: Flooring and toilets repaired and replaced
Kitchen: New shelf, new stainless-steel sink and tiling
Roof cleared and repairs carried out
Building walls painted and whitewashed
School grounds cleared and tidied up
Some concerns were brought to our attention in September that things were not progressing as well as they should so a meeting was arranged for October 18th involving Ankur, TTT and the Head teacher. The meeting failed to reach a satisfactory conclusion for Ankur or the Head teacher.
So with regards to the improvement of the teaching we are disappointed to inform that funding has been withdrawn as from November due to differences between the new Head teacher and Ankur which has made it impossible for Ankur to work with the school. Funding will no longer be provided to support extra member(s) of staff or maintenance for the school. If the situation changes significantly, then we would be willing to consider supporting the school again in the future.
We can consider the project as having been worthwhile as it has given us a much better understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the school plus the fact that we leave the school in a much better condition.
