Gurmukh Singh – Committee Chairman

 GS

I was born in India and came to the UK from Thakarki in 1977 through Sh Bhajan Singh to marry Parmjit. We are blessed with 2 children and live in Barnstaple,Devon where I work for Eaton Corporation as an Engineer, supervising the production of aeronautic & motor racing car components.I have had a keen interest in social and community work from a young age and I enjoy helping others where I can, especially to be involved in making a positive contribution to the village.

We collected donations in 2009 for the Thakarki sewerage project from all over the world and now as group of committee members have set up “The Thakarki Trust” with the aim of engaging NRI’s to connect with this good cause which will benefit the whole community. We would like to thank all members who have joined “The Thakarki Trust’ for all your support and generosity without which we couldn’t have made our village a better place and ensure this can continue going forward.

By occupation  I am a heavy goods truck driver.

I am married to Parmjit Singh, we are blessed with a daughter and two sons and wonderful grandchildren.

I am a Chartered Chemist and a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

I have worked as a Chemist and a Manager for global chemical companies.

Parmjit and I have both taken early retirement from work and enjoying being full time grandparents.

I was born in India.  My parents emigrated to the UK when I was 2 years old and my return visit was not for another 38 years.

Early retirement has led to us spending time in Thakarki and travelling to other destinations on our checklist.  I believe Thakarki is quite unique both in location and the commitment of its NRI’s who are prepared to contribute their time and effort.  I hope that by the formation of The Thakarki Trust we can provide a structured platform for engaging all NRI’s with the village so that we can pool all our knowledge and resources for the benefit of the community for the present and in the future.  I hope as a member of the Committee I can make a small contribution in achieving that goal.

The Thakarki Trust (TTT) & Gift Aid

The Thakarki Trust (TTT) &  Gift Aid

Donations received from U.K. resident tax-payers now attracts aid from the U.K. Government under the auspices of the Charitable status of: The Thakarki Trust.

As an example this means that under the current rates of tax for each £100 donated by a U.K. tax payer the TTT will  receive an additional £25 from the HMRC.

This should prove to be a useful additional income stream in the years to come.

In order for the TTT to effect this the completion of a declaration is required.

This will cover any donations from 7th March 2014 & will subsist until revoked.

This is presented below with the request that it be completed & emailed to me at peter.singh@live.com.

For those uncertain of their tax status, the criterion is that you need to be paying some U.K. tax whether through earnings, self-employment, interest on savings in a building society/bank accounts, dividends, pensions, rental income, or capital gains tax.

Higher rate tax payers may claim an additional relief.

Company donations should be paid gross (in the above example £125) & claimed as a deductible expense.

Other taxes such as VAT and Council tax do not qualify, nor does any non-UK tax.

For those resident in other Countries interested in the possibility of setting up something similar, I will be pleased to assist.

The intention of your Trustees is transparency coupled with minimal administration.

To this end we envisage the setting up of a Direct Debit Form which will be posted on the Site soon.

This will facilitate the collection of  donations further enabling  the provision of maximum assistance.

Naturally, this remains a request & for those more comfortable with the traditional direct verbal approach, this will also be respected & is accepted.

Annual Accounts for the TTT are intended to be prepared & made available on the Web-site after the accounting date so that both donations received & the assistance given may be viewed.

With the ongoing support of the members, extended families & associates the common goal will become reality.

We continue to benefit from the direction provided by our forebears, let us continue their work.

Thank you

PM Singh
